LIGHT FALL

Jonathan Cooper Gallery

Monday 5 February - Wednesday 21 February

Light Fall is a new body of work that further explores the close at hand depictions of a life…leaves and fruit, books and cloth, people. It is an ode to a collection of objects held dear, they are the things that describe our history and make a home. The place can change but the precious things we choose to carry with us through life are a constant. They remind us of someone or somewhere. Then there is the light, now through another window, or the gap in the curtain or the autumn light on the leaves that day, creating golden wings as she walks by.

Many thanks to Jonathan Cooper and Melissa Tahar at the gallery.

half turn

..a visit to Pallant House Gallery with Amy, to see the Gwen John exhibition, yielded this moment. So much about it is as if from a time gone by, save for the trainers on her feet. The subtle and restrained palette and quiet interior views within Gwen John’s work inspired the piece.

The exhibition is on at the Mall Galleries from 29 November to 16 December

‘Byrne at the V&A’ was selected to be part of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition this year. The exhibition was at the Mall Galleries from 5th to 13th May and it was an honour to have a work hanging amongst so many wonderful portraits. Many thanks to Byrne for taking the time to spend a day with me at the V&A where I took the photographs and worked on a number of studies for this piece.

Portrait Commission

Towards the end of last year I received a wonderful commission through Jonathan Cooper Gallery to paint siblings Elizabeth, 16, and Fergus, 13.

A gift to the parents James and Eve from their grandparents.

‘Parch’ 50cm x 40cm can be seen at the annual exhibition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters at the Mall Galleries. The exhibition opens on Thursday 24th November and it is always an honour to have a painting selected. This year the theme is ‘changing times’

‘I wanted to try and capture the moment on canvas, inspired by the bleached palette of colours and the small child hardly there in the parched landscape. It was the middle of not only the hottest week in August in England but also the driest summer on record. I am quite at home with a landscape of these colours having spent a large part of my life in Southern Africa, so the very greenness of this island has been a source of wonder and delight. All causing me to reflect on the changing times and weather patterns, the effect of climate change and the havoc humankind has wreaked on our natural world. Frances, aged 3, has yet no idea of its magnitude even though she can already say ‘there is a water crisis granny’.

There is always light

19th April to 7th May

Jonathan Cooper Gallery

20 Park Walk, London, SW10 0AQ

I am excited to announce that an exhibition at Jonathan Cooper Gallery will open on Tuesday 19th April. I would like to thank Jonathan, Melissa and Adam at the gallery for all their wonderful support. The body of work, made through the last two years is a meditation on light, it’s connection with spring, with new life and with new work. The paintings are simple and light-filled moments in still life.
